In the Garuda Purana , Maharaurava is described as one of the most agonizing realms of punishment. While the word Raurava refers to a place of weeping and lamentation, Maharaurava signifies the "Greater" or "Extreme" version of that suffering.

​This hell is specifically for those who have lived a life of extreme selfishness and cruelty at the expense of others. The primary sins include:

• Usurping Property: Forcefully or fraudulently seizing someone else's land, house, or inheritance.
• Depriving Others of Livelihood: People who destroy someone's means of earning a living or steal the resources meant for a community or a family.
• Extreme Cruelty: Those who find pleasure in the suffering of other living beings (humans or animals) and inflict pain without mercy.
• Betraying Dependents: Taking advantage of those who are under your care or protection (such as orphans, the elderly, or employees).

​The punishments in Maharaurava are far more intense than in the standard Raurava hell:

• The Ruru Demons: The name "Raurava" is said to come from a fierce species of serpents or creatures called Ruru . In this hell, these creatures (which the sinner may have harmed in past lives) take form to hunt and torment the soul.
• Intense Heat and Fire: The ground and atmosphere are often described as being scorching hot, like burning copper, making every moment a struggle for the soul.
• Physical Mutilation: The messengers of Yama (Yamadutas) use various sharp instruments to punish the sinner, reflecting the pain the sinner once caused to others.
• Long Duration: The scriptures suggest that the stay in Maharaurava is exceptionally long, lasting for thousands of years until the negative karma is finally exhausted.

​3. The Philosophical Message

Maharaurava serves as a stern warning against Greed ( Lobha ) and Cruelty ( Krurata ) . It teaches that:

1. Karmic Debt: Whatever pain you inflict on a living being will eventually return to you with multiple times the intensity.
2. Respect for Rights: Every individual has a right to their life and property. Stealing these rights is considered a "Mahapaap" (Great Sin).

• Raurava : Generally for those who lie or cheat for personal gain. The suffering is intense but considered a "standard" level of punishment.
• Maharaurava : For those whose actions destroyed the lives of others. It is characterized by much more aggressive tormentors and harsher environments.
