Krimibhojana: The Hell of Worms
Watch nowAccording to the Garuda Purana and other ancient Vedic scriptures, 'Krimibhojana' is one of the 28 specific hells (Narakas) located in the realm of Yamaloka. It is a place of severe retribution for those who lived a life of extreme selfishness.
Who is Sentenced to Krimibhojana?
This particular hell is reserved for individuals who committed the following sins during their lifetime:
- Neglecting Sacrifices: Those who consume food without performing the Pancha-Yajnas (five daily sacrifices to Devas, Pitrus, Humans, Creatures, and Rishis).
- Selfish Consumption: Individuals who eat delicious meals while their guests, elders, children, or hungry dependents remain unserved or starving.
- Lack of Charity: Those who possess resources but refuse to share food with the needy or the helpless.
The Nature of the Punishment
- The Environment: The Krimibhojana is described as a vast reservoir or pit, spanning nearly 100,000 yojanas, filled entirely with millions of ravenous worms, insects, and serpents.
- The Agony: As a form of poetic justice, the sinner is thrown into this pit. Just as they "consumed" their food while ignoring others, they are now "consumed" by these worms. The insects bite and gnaw at the sinner's body continuously.
- The Cycle: Despite being eaten, the sinner's subtle body (Yaatana Deha) does not perish; it heals only to be bitten again, ensuring the punishment lasts until their karmic debt is fully cleared.
The Spiritual Lesson
The description of Krimibhojana serves as a moral reminder of the importance of hospitality (Atithi Devo Bhava) and selflessness. In Indian culture, food is considered a gift from the Divine, and sharing it with others is one of the highest forms of Dharma
